Gnumeric is a spreadsheet program released under the GNU General Public License . It is free software and available for Unix and GNU / Linux . There are Windows versions in circulation, but they are no longer maintained by the developers and disseminated (2015).

Development history

Gnumeric was developed in 2000/2001 by Miguel de Icaza as a free spreadsheet program inspired by Microsoft Excel , but development is now being continued by the Gnumeric community.

Gnumeric performance

Gnumeric's goal is to be the best spreadsheet program possible without duplicating existing products. Gnumeric has many mathematical functions, some of which are ahead of the established competing products. The project also reacts more openly to criticism from academia and, in contrast to the Microsoft product, corrected numerous implementation errors in the statistical functions at an early stage. Pivot tables and macros are not yet supported.

Version 1.8.2, which was released in March 2008, has many new features, including new diagram types, improved printing of spreadsheets and improved compatibility with formulas in Excel. Import and export filters have been revised and support for the OpenDocument format for the Excel 2007 file format has been implemented. Version 1.10.17 is the last one with GTK + 2 and can only be used on systems without GTK + 3.

With level 1.12, the GTK + 2 library was switched to the more modern GTK + 3 for Linux, as in many other Linux projects. With this change, compilation for Windows is considerably more difficult due to errors in the Windows branch of GTK + 3 and was discontinued with version 1.12.17. A current GTK + 3 for Windows 64bit is experimentally available, but only the use in Gimp 3.0 or Inkscape 1.0 can make a current Gnumeric for Windows interesting for the developers. With MSYS2 GTK + 3 and then the current Gnumeric can be installed on Windows. There is currently no complete manual or script for the layman at Gumeric.org. An integrated Linux from " Fall Creator " (version 1709) is now available in Windows 10 . Instructions for installing window programs are already available.

In 1.12.x were fuzzing many errors detected tests and thus increases the accuracy and quality of the code.

Since Gnumeric has low hardware requirements, it is also suitable for older computers.

Compatibility with other file formats

Gnumeric has extensive import and export capabilities. It supports file formats from Microsoft Excel , Microsoft Works spreadsheet (* .wks), Apache OpenOffice / LibreOffice , XML , HTML , LaTeX (export only), Applixware , Quattro Pro , PlanPerfect , SYLK , DIF and Lotus-123 . The own format is based on XML, which is compressed using gzip .

use

On mobile devices with Android , Gnumeric is available as part of the Ubuntu noroot package in the Google Play Store.
