Joli OS (formerly Jolicloud) is a Linux distribution that was specially developed for netbooks and is based on Ubuntu . The support has since been discontinued. Joli OS is free software and is designed to work with web-based alternative programs that are integrated using Prism . Joli OS is based on an Ubuntu Netbook Remix , which is currently based on Long Term Support Version 10.04 “Lucid Lynx” from Ubuntu. In March 2011 the renaming of the distribution from Jolicloud to Joli OS was announced in order to stand out from the own web desktop for Google Chrome with the same name. According to the official website, the project was discontinued in 2016.

Goal setting

Joli OS is developed by Tariq Krim, the inventor of the Netvibes website . He wants to make laptops cheaper by using more free and web-based software. Joli OS therefore relies on a strong integration of applications and services from the social web .

Technically, Joli OS aims for low power consumption and low hardware requirements and is designed for parallel operation with Windows . One focus is on fast, simple installation (graphic Windows installer Joli OS Express ), short start times and automatic commissioning of devices for wireless data transmission ( Bluetooth , WLAN , UMTS ).

Another main focus is on networking, so that a connection to the Joli OS community is automatically established after an internet connection has been established. The underlying idea is to integrate a social network directly into the user interface. This connection is optional and can be deactivated after installation.

user interface

Web services such as Twitter , Facebook or Skype are integrated in the user interface of Joli OS . In addition, all options are available that a normal Ubuntu system offers.

technology

Joli OS relies on HTML5 and Chromium , which are used to integrate web applications locally on a computer. Furthermore, Joli OS can be installed on one computer in parallel to other operating systems.
