The SME Server (formerly: e-Smith ) is a free , CentOS Linux-based Small Business Server distribution for networks of small to medium size, which is an alternative to Zentyal . SME Server can - partly through additions from other providers - take on a large number of server tasks in the areas of routing / gateway , security, network infrastructure, collaboration software and communication. Most services can be set up and configured using a convenient web interface. Therefore, no or only basic Linux knowledge is required for the usual settings and changes.

The currently stable SME Server 8.1 has been available in 32-bit (only with PAE) and 64-bit versions based on CentOS 5.10 since February 2014 .
