Fax server

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fax servers offer after the client-server model on, faxes received to and send. A fax server is both a PC in a computer network on which faxes come in or go out with the help of appropriate software (for example a Unified Messaging program) , and this software itself. For precise delimitation, one speaks of a fax Server software and a fax server PC .

As a rule, the fax server must be connected to both the telephone system and the computer network. The connection to the telephone system is usually made via an active ISDN card or a fax modem .

Received fax documents can usually be passed on to another program (e.g. a document management system ) via the fax server as an image file, usually in Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) .

Outgoing faxes can often be sent directly via appropriate programs at the user's workstation. In the simplest case, a special " printer driver " is set up which enables faxes to be sent from any application (from which printing can be carried out).

The performance of a fax server solution results primarily from the number of possible simultaneous send and receive processes. At one ISDN - Primary Rate Interface , for example, can CAPI -based solutions achieve 30 fax connections simultaneously. Only one fax connection can be made at the same time with a modem on an analog telephone connection.
