Afton

Afton , also called Afton Water , is the name of a river in the Scottish county of Ayrshire . The water is best known for the poem Sweet Afton by Robert Burns , who came from this area. Coupled with an older Scottish melody, the poem became an equally widespread folk song (in this case often under the title Flow Gently, Sweet Afton , after the first few words of the text).

Due to the popularity of the poem and song, the name Afton was connoted with "homeland idyll " and in this way became the popular toponym of newly established settlements in the United States . These include
