Arktur 4.0

The c't / ODS school server Arktur was a school server project based on SUSE or Slackware , which developed a server specifically for use and support by inexperienced staff. This was awarded by the Bertelsmann Foundation .

Arktur put u. a. a connection to the Internet , offered a file server , a server for mail and news, a web server for local pages and much more. It allowed the connection of Windows, Apple and Linux clients . The user administration was optimized for the school operation (class-wise recording, relocation and training); the protection of minors while surfing was configurable.

It has been in development since 1997. According to estimates from 2005, it was used in more than 2000 schools in Germany and in German-speaking countries.

history

Arktur was developed by Klaus Füller in 1996 and distributed from 1997 with the support of the Schools on the Net Association , the Open German School Network (ODS) and the magazine c't .

From 1999 Reiner Klaproth was maintainer and published Arktur 3.0 to 3.3; Version 3.1 was also the “official” version sent by the c't .

In 2003 Reiner Klaproth started working on Arktur 4 (with LDAP support), a little later the Arktur team started working on Arktur 3.5 ( maintainer : Thomas Litsch; backport of Arktur 4.0beta9), and Helmut Hullen developed Arktur 3.4 as an upgradeable version based on Arktur 3.3 with the Slackware carrier system .

In 2004 Arktur 3.5 was published as the official version of the c't.

In 2007 Helmut Hullen published Arktur 3.6 as a successor to Arktur 3.4 and 3.5 (based on Slackware 11.0), and Reiner Klaproth published Arktur 4.0rc6 based on SuSE 9.0. This is currently (as of 2019) the last available version.

From 2008 the Arktur 3.6 line was further developed as Arktur 5.x, but was never published for download.
