The City West Link is an arterial road in Sydney in the east of the Australian state of New South Wales . It connects Victoria Road at the western end of the ANZAC Bridge in Rozelle with Parramatta Road ( Great Western Highway ) in Five Dock . It thus represents an alternative route to Parramatta Road from the city center to the western suburbs of the city.

course

The City West Link begins on Victoria Road (S40) in Rozelle. Parallel to Lilyfield Road , it runs west through Lilyfield to Iron Cove Bay. From there it leads about 1.5 km to the southwest and ends at Parramatta Road (Met-4) in Five Dock.

history

The City West Link was - to the disappointment of the residents - nothing more than the expansion of existing roads to at least four lanes. The work was carried out in four construction phases:

  • Construction phase 1 (completed in December 1991): Height-free connection to Victoria Road
  • Stage 2 (completed February 1993): Widening of Brenan Street between The Crescent in Rozelle and Catherine Street in Lilyfield . By the time the next construction phase was completed, Brenan Street became a one-way street that led to Lilyfield Road .
  • Construction phase 3 (completed in May 1995): Widening of Dobroyd Parade and Wattle Street to four lanes from Parramatta Road to Hawthorne Canal (Iron Cove)
  • Phase 4 (completed December 2000): Widening the link between Dobroyd Parade and Catherine Street , including a new bridge over the Hawthorne Canal at Iron Cove. The City West Link was added to the Metroad 4.

At the beginning of 2004, drivers complained that the new road was already overloaded just four years after its completion. Since it flows into Parramatta Road in Five Docks, it relieves the part of Parramatta Road that continues from there to the city center, but only relocates the bottleneck further out of town and does not remove it.

In 2005 a bottleneck at the east end of the City West Link was removed. Until then, the two lanes on the crossing to Victoria Road inward into town, west of the ANZAC Bridge, were reduced to just one lane. Now the two lanes have been pulled through to Victoria Road, where, together with the three lanes of Victoria Road, they are reduced to four lanes over the ANZAC Bridge.

Expansion plans

The New South Wales Road Traffic Authority wanted to connect the City West Link to the Western Motorway, thereby completely bypassing Parramatta Road. All crossings at the same level on the City West Link were also to be eliminated at the same time. The expansion would have been difficult and would have required the construction of bridges for the City West Link over the intersections in question, some of which could only have been built in two lanes due to lack of space.

Residents and action groups voiced fears that such an expansion would only worsen the already existing traffic congestion. At the end of 2004 this project was abandoned.
