Trisquel (officially Trisquel GNU / Linux ) is a Linux distribution derived from Ubuntu . The project aims to create an operating system exclusively from Free Software , i. H. do without proprietary drivers or firmware . It uses a version of the Ubuntu kernel that uses non-free code such as B. Binary blobs removed. Trisquel is a community-driven, non-profit project that is funded by donations. The logo is a Celtic triskele . Trisquel is listed by the Free Software Foundation as a distribution containing free software only.

Overview

There are four basic versions of Trisquel.

Source packages for all Trisquel versions are available for download as 3 GB DVD ISO images.

The CPU architectures IA-32 and x64 are supported, which contain a free software compatible chipset .

Trisquel

The standard Trisquel distribution includes the MATE desktop environment and 50 preinstalled languages on a 2.5 GB live DVD ISO image.

Trisquel Mini

This version was developed to run on weak or older hardware. It uses the LXDE desktop environment , which requires little memory. It is preinstalled with English and Spanish and offered on a 600MB live CD ISO image.

Trisquel Sugar TOAST

Based on the Sugar Learning Environment, a free graphical user interface designed for student and interactive learning. It has been available since Trisquel 7.0 LTS and is provided on a 500MB live CD ISO image.

Trisquel NetInstall

Contains a minimal, text-based network installation program for reloading other packages over the Internet and is provided on a 25 MB CD ISO image.

history

The project started in 2004 with funding from the University of Vigo for Galician language support in educational software and was officially launched in April 2005 by Richard Stallman , founder of the GNU project .

In 2008 Trisquel was added to the list of free GNU / Linux distributions after the GNU FSDG .

In November 2014, with the release of version 7.0 LTS, the website was renewed and the community's participation in the development process was made easier thanks to the code tracker and new build system.

reception

Distrowatch's Jesse Smith reviewed version 4.0, "Taranis," describing it as well-engineered and reliable. He identified difficulties with software removal as the main problem of the edition. Smith praised Trisquel as an operating system that also showed usability, rather than just conforming to free software criteria.

Jim Lynch of Linux Desktop Reviews called the 5.5 version, "Brigantia", "well laid out and well developed" and recommended it to users regardless of whether they were interested in using only free software or not. Lynch judged that the version was suitable for beginners and advanced users.

Chris Fisher and Matt Hartley of the Linux Action Show praised the design, ease of use, and hardware support of the Trisquel 5.5 and Trisquel 5.5 Mini, but criticized the Trisquel forum for being contentious and found that the firmware limitation would limit the functionality of wireless connections. In their opinion, the distribution is intended for power users and new users should use a different distribution.

Katherine Noyes of PC-World reviewed version 6.0 and highlighted the long-term support, the classic user interface and the free core of the distribution.

Distrowatch's Jesse Smith said Trisquel 7.0 LTS was easy to install, pleasant to use, and had no problems. In his opinion, Trisquel seemed to be as powerful as a commercial product that cannot be described as free according to the definition of the FSF . Users could encounter problems when using hardware that requires binary blobs, and Flash support is also not perfect. On the other hand, Trisquel is just as functional as any other mainstream Linux distribution.

The founder of the GNU project Richard Stallman stated in January 2015 that he uses Trisquel on a ThinkPad X60.

use

Trisquel is preferred as a pre-installed operating system for notebooks that should be as free of proprietary software and firmware as possible .

In 2015 , the FSF added ThinkPad notebooks with the free firmware Libreboot and pre-installed Trisquel to its "Respects your Freedom" hardware list.

The company Libiquity offers a modified Thinkpad X200 with Libreboot and Trisquel 7.0 LTS.
