Pardus is a free Linux distribution that was developed as part of the Pardus project in Turkey . The open source project was founded in September 2003 and is being developed and financed by the National Research Institute for Electronics and Cryptology (UEKAE) as an independent Linux distribution; Pardus is therefore not a derivative .

The project name is derived from the scientific name of the Anatolian leopard ( Panthera pardus ).

Pardus focuses on usability and stability and wants to ensure that Pardus is used nationwide in Turkey. In addition to its use in public institutions, organizations and authorities, Pardus is also intended to be used in private households. This is to be achieved, among other things, through broad hardware support and the targeted development of graphic components, programs and tools in order to be able to largely bypass console inputs.

developer

Pardus is being developed in Turkey by the National Research Institute for Electronics and Cryptology (UEKAE). This facility is subordinate to the Turkish Science and Technology Research Office (TÜBİTAK). In 2006 there were 15 developers working on Pardus and an unknown number of volunteers. By 2012, the number of developers should be increased to around 50. Turkish students also have the opportunity to do an internship with the Pardus project.

aims

According to the project coordinator, Erkan Tekman, the Pardus project was started in 2003 to ensure the security of the computers and the like. a. in areas such as intelligence and the army. To ensure this, it had to be ensured that the source code is open and freely modifiable. The cost savings through the use of a specially developed operating system based on Linux also played a role, since Microsoft's Windows operating systems on computers of the armed forces and civil authorities meant that a lot of money had to be transferred abroad for licenses.

distribution

Pardus has been used in a pilot project since April 2007 by the Central Army Recruiting Authority (ASAL) and its representatives. Both other administrative structures of the armed forces and the Turkish Ministry of Defense and Education are monitoring the switch to Pardus, the army's central recruiting authority, and are planning a switch. At the same time, the Ministry of Education will introduce Pardus in isolated schools this year.

Pardus is used by the Turkish High Radio and Television Council to archive, manage and analyze the broadcast program content of 210 national television channels and 860 national radio stations.

In 2007, the representative of the Ministry of Health for Manisa Province developed a roadmap for the implementation of the e-health project based on Pardus. The project will give patients, doctors and pharmacists a central access file. This includes, for example, the patient's history of illness, but also the option of paying for the patient's medication prescriptions online. In the first stage, 360 computers were connected to two central servers and the data from one million patients have been recorded so far. In the next stage, the provinces of Antalya , Bursa , Hatay and Eskişehir will be connected to the e-health system.

Pardus 2007 has been downloaded from the project homepage 120,000 times (as of February 1, 2007). This corresponds to an increase of 300% compared to version 1.0. If you add data traffic from universities such as Istanbul Bilgi University and others that also host Pardus, the 2007 version of Pardus was downloaded over 200,000 times. Pardus 2007 was also distributed to computer magazines that participate in the distribution campaign with a circulation of 120,000 CDs . The representation of the Chamber of Electrical Engineers in Ankara is also distributing 10,000 Pardus 2007 CDs.

Individual software packages for Pardus 2011.2 are updated by voluntary supporters, including the German-speaking Pardus community PardusUser.

In January 2012 it was announced that the community branch of the Turkish state Linux Pardus will be discontinued. In the future, the distribution will only be available in one version for authorities and companies. The successor to the Pardus version for private users is the Fork Pisi Linux.

Other versions

Pardus Corporate

The so-called corporate version was specially tailored to the needs of companies and public institutions. This is a distribution designed for stability and long-term support (for 4 years), but compared to the "normal" Pardus version, which is especially suitable for private use, it has a smaller selection of software, libraries and setting options brings along.

The Pardus Corporate 2 version released on February 16, 2011 includes Linux kernel 2.6.35.11, KDE 3.5.10, Mozilla Firefox 3.6.13, LibreOffice 3.3.1.1, Xorg 1.7.7, Gimp 2.6.11 and Python 2.6. 5.

A 32- and 64-bit system is also available for download as live and installation images for Pardus Corporate 2.

Alternative desktop environments

In spring 2011, plans for further versions of Pardus Linux with alternative desktop environments were announced under the name Comak ; the first beta versions have now been published. A Linux system with the free desktop environment Xfce (version 4.8) is available under the name Pardus 2011 Nusrat . Pardus 2011 Falco Peregrinus is equipped with the window manager Fluxbox . Since April 2011 beta versions with the desktop environments Gnome and LXDE have also been available.

Components

YALI

Screenshot for the installation of Pardus 2011.1

YALI ( Y et A nother L inux I installers to) is the setup wizard Pardus and guides the user through a graphical user interface quickly and easily through the installation. The basic configurations of the packages are made here.

Mudur

Mudur is Pardus' own init system , which mounts the root partition, loads modules and initializes the corresponding services.

Çomar

ÇOMAR ( CO nfiguration MA nage R ) is the configuration manager from Pardus, with which you can make necessary settings on the hardware , the boot process , the networks , the user accounts , the time and country settings and the display, which ensures that that the system is working properly.

Package management PiSi

PiSi ( P ackages I nstalled S uccessfully as I ntended, pronunciation : [ pisi ]) is the package management system from Pardus. It is the primary tool used to install, remove, or update applications. PiSi stores and manages the dependencies of the various packages, libraries and COMAR processes. The reasons for using an independent package management system are the lack of simplicity of existing, mature package management systems, the great effort required to further develop existing systems and the strict separation of package specifications and installation instructions.

The official depots in 2011 comprised over 4,500 packages for Pardus 2011; Further PiSi packages are available in Community Depots. Package requests can be expressed via the Pardus bug tracking system, but PiSi also offers the option of compiling programs yourself .

Properties of PiSi:

  • uses LZMA
  • programmed in Python
  • small and efficient packages
  • Package sources written in XML and Python
  • faster database access through the use of the Berkeley DB
  • Integration of low-level and high-level package operations (dependencies)
  • Framework to develop applications and tools on it

PiSi itself is command line based (CLI), with the package manager a corresponding user-friendly, Qt -based graphical user interface (GUI) is available. A comprehensive, German-language introduction to Pardus' own package management can be downloaded in a preliminary version from the German Pardus Community.

Kaptan

Screenshot: Kaptan for system adaptation

After the initial installation of Pardus, the user is welcomed by Kaptan and guided through a configuration in order to make the first personalized settings and to define his preferences in operation (such as preferred repositories , optics, mouse settings and click properties).

Zemberek

Zemberek was integrated into Pardus to give the user access to a Turkish spelling and grammar checker in their word processing (OpenOffice), text and chat (Kopete), calendar (Kontact) and email software (Kmail).
