End of life

The English term End of Life ( EOL for short ; for the end of life or discontinued product ) in the electronics and computer sector refers to products, components or software that are no longer produced or supported by the manufacturer and are therefore no longer available. But just not making any further improvements through patches can quickly make devices unsafe to de facto unusable due to immature software .

In electromechanics , the term End Of Life describes the section in the life cycle of products from the transition from series production to discontinuation (post-series phase). Only small numbers are required as part of the phase-out and spare parts production. These small quantities can often no longer be manufactured economically for series and supplier companies. If production service at this stage take over the leak and spare parts production for OEMs, this is also called outsourcing or outsourcing referred.

In electronics, the semiconductor manufacturers publish lists with the discontinued components, if necessary with the mention of a recommended replacement type. In this way, a developer can clarify in good time whether the replacement can be used or whether a change to the circuit is necessary.

In the area of computer administration in a company , the EoL of a computer is understood to mean its end of operation. Hard drive data should be permanently erased before being sold or disposed of .

End-of-life management also refers to the consideration of the entire life cycle of an electronic product during development. The main focus here is on environmental protection with the disposal or recycling of the product after its useful life.
