KaOS is a Linux distribution for common workstation computers with x64 architecture, which uses KDE Plasma 5 as a desktop environment and mainly Qt-based programs and which continuously provides the latest versions as a rolling release . GRUB acts as the boot loader , systemd is used as the init software .

The distribution uses the package manager Pacman from Arch Linux , but uses its own packages and repositories ; its repository size is deliberately concentrated on around 2,200 packages. The Octopi graphical user interface can be used to easily manage these packages . There are also user repositories called KCP.

About every two months a new ISO file with a snapshot of the current state of development is published, which can be used as an installation medium or live system. Installation with a graphical user interface is made possible by the Calamares supplied .

In addition to a general website and a user forum, there is the IRC channel #kaosx and a Github instance.
