Yggdrasil Linux was delivered on CD-ROM from November 1992. It could even be started as a live CD. In the print editions of HOWTOs at the time, Yggdrasil Linux was often listed as "Plug-and-Play-Linux", as it had hardware detection that is now a matter of course .

The distribution discontinued in 1995 is still available. It could be of interest to people who need support for old hardware or who are generally interested in the historical development of Linux .

Person and company

In addition to the Linux distribution, the Yggdrasil company published some of the first books on Linux compilation and contributed significantly to the development of the file system and the X Window System .

Adam J. Richter played a key role in all of these developments, assisting a group of small Linux companies and enthusiasts. Richter currently offers software consulting and is still working on the Linux kernel. He also frequently attends Linux events in northern California.

Word origin

The name Yggdrasil stands for the world ash in Germanic mythology.
