Bobby McDermott
Robert McDermott (born January 7, 1914 in Whitestone Queens , New York , † October 3, 1963 in Yonkers , New York) was an American basketball player and coach.
From 1935 he played for various professional teams , between 1936 and 1939 for the Original Celtics and from 1941 to 1949 for various NBL teams .
McDermott was six feet tall and played in the position of guard . He was by far the most accurate and strongest guard of the late 1930s and early 1940s. In 1945 he became the first NBL player to score over 20 points per game over the season.
In the 1946/47 season, McDermott formed a dominant duo with George Mikan and won the NBL championship. After he was MVP of the NBL five times in a row between 1942 and 1946 , sports journalists, players and coaches of the NBL voted him the best player of all time. After the end of his sports career in 1950, he worked as an insurance agent. He died in a car accident.
On May 3, 1988, he was posthumously inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame . His grandson is former SAP board member Bill McDermott .
