William Richard "Bill" McDermott (born August 18, 1961 in New York City ) is an American manager . He was CEO of SAP SE from February 2010 to October 2019 .

Career

Bill McDermott received a bachelor's degree in business administration from Dowling College on Long Island , New York. He received his Masters of Business Administration from the JL Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University , Illinois, and participated in the Executive Development Program at the University of Pennsylvania 's Wharton School of Management.

After building his own small business, a local delicatessen store, during school and college, and selling it for $ 7,000 for a $ 7,000 move after completing his college degree , McDermott spent 17 years in sales at Xerox Corporation, where he rose to be the youngest corporate officer and division head . Under his leadership, his division received the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award , presented annually by the President of the United States.

McDermott then served as President of the market research company Gartner Inc. and then as Executive Vice President of Global Sales at the software manufacturer Siebel Systems .

In 2002 Bill McDermott became CEO of SAP America. In Delaware County , he initially managed SAP's business in the Americas (USA, Canada and Latin America) and Asia-Pacific regions. In 2008 McDermott joined the board of directors of SAP as head of global sales. From February 2010 he was Co-CEO of SAP AG together with Jim Hagemann Snabe .

In November 2010, McDermott was named one of the “25 Most Influential Executives of 2010” by Computer Reseller News magazine's annual award for the 100 best IT leaders. McDermott was also named a 2010 Business 100 list by Irish America magazine for excellence in leadership.

Since May 2014, after Snabe's move to the supervisory board of SAP SE, he was sole CEO. In 2016, McDermott was named Manager of the Year by Handelsblatt . On October 11, 2019, his resignation as CEO of SAP SE was announced with immediate effect. Jennifer Morgan and Christian Klein were simultaneously confirmed as his successors . On October 22nd, 2019, the Californian software company ServiceNow announced that Bill McDermott will succeed John Donahoe as their new CEO at the end of 2019 .

With remuneration of around 15 million euros in 2019, McDermott was one of the highest-paid CEOs of a Dax group.

Mandates in supervisory boards

McDermott has several supervisory board mandates: for example, he has been on the supervisory board of Under Armor , a US sporting goods manufacturer for functional clothing , since 2005 . In addition, he holds a position on the board of directors at ANSYS , a US software development company that specializes in simulation-driven product development. He is also on the board of directors of PAETEC Communications, a provider of integrated communications services. McDermott is also a member of the Advisory Board of Villanova University in Pennsylvania .

social commitment

McDermott is actively committed to society and works to ensure that companies live up to their social responsibility. In 2005 McDermott was elected to the US Chamber of Commerce, the world's largest corporate agency with three million members, and to the Chamber Foundation Board. In 2006, McDermott received the Yitzhak Rabin Public Services Award for promoting technological innovation in Israel. In 2008, City Year Greater Philadelphia named him “Idealist of the Year”, thereby thanking him for his exemplary commitment to the city of Philadelphia and its citizens. His social commitment is also reflected in his position on the national advisory board of the US aid program KIPP (“Knowledge is Power Program”), which supports socially disadvantaged children on their way to higher education.

Private life

McDermott grew up in a simple family. His father was a maintenance electrician for the New York electricity company ConEdison . He has a brother and a sister. His paternal grandfather was professional basketball player Bobby McDermott .

McDermott's marriage to Julie had two sons. He lives in Villanova (Pennsylvania) and Heidelberg .

In early July 2015, McDermott lost his left eye after an accident. During his recovery, he continued to run the company from outside. In October 2015, he returned to the SAP headquarters in Walldorf for the first time after the accident .
