Lucchi worked for years as a test driver for Aprilia , developing the machines for the motorcycle and superbike world championships .

Career

Marcellino Lucchi started motorcycling in 1977 at the age of 20 . He worked in the garbage disposal and for many years only raced as a weekend hobby . He made his debut in the motorcycle world championship at the Grand Prix of Nations in 1982 , when he finished seventh on a Yamaha in the 250 cc race. Until 1989 , the Italian competed regularly as a wildcard pilot in 250 World Cup races, but without having great success. In 1990 and 1991 Lucchi competed in the quarter liter world championship on Aprilia as a regular driver, but again failed to attract attention with top placings.

In 1992 Lucchi did not take part in any Grands Prix, but was the first Italian 250 cc champion on Aprilia . By 1997 he won this title a total of six times in a row.

From 1993 Marcellino Lucchi started again sporadically in the 250 World Championship as a wildcard and substitute pilot. At the Italian Grand Prix in Mugello in 1995 , at the age of 38, he achieved his first podium in the motorcycle world championship with third place behind Max Biaggi and Tetsuya Harada . The following year Lucchi even finished second behind Biaggi at his home Grand Prix. He also competed in the 400 cm³ V2 April as a substitute for Doriano Romboni, the only two 500 World Championship races of his career.

At the 1998 Italian Grand Prix , Marcellino Lucchi achieved the only Grand Prix victory of his career in the quarter liter class. In the race in Mugello, which had to be stopped and restarted due to rain, as a wildcard driver he relegated his Aprilia works team colleagues Valentino Rossi , Tetsuya Harada and Loris Capirossi to the positions and was the fourth oldest winner of a 250cc at 41 years and 65 days -Grand Prix in the history of the motorcycle world championship. The later third place at the Grand Prix of the Czech Republic in Brno , where he started for the Docshop Racing team as a substitute for Jürgen Fuchs , helped the Italian to rank 15 in the overall ranking and thus to the best World Championship placement of his career.

After that, Lucchi could no longer build on this success. He contested his last Grand Prix at the age of 47 in 2004 in Malaysia .

Marcellino Lucchi completed a total of 78 world championship races in 23 years and achieved one victory as well as four further podium positions and three pole positions .
