DSV coach Fred Harthaus signed the talented young striker in 1955 from TuS Großenbaum (today GSG Duisburg) and in his first league season he was Duisburg's top scorer with eleven goals in 25 appearances . The long-standing top performer experienced the most successful round in 1956/57 when he reached the runner-up in the Oberliga West with the game club and thus made it to the final round of the 1957 German soccer championship. The B national player also ended his career in Duisburg. After the league relegation in 1962 , Rolf Benning played until 1964/65 in the second-rate Regionalliga West for the later renamed fusion club Eintracht Duisburg . Later he worked in various functions at GSG Duisburg.
