Walter Münnix (born January 2, 1935 ) is a former German football player who completed 52 matches in the Oberliga West for the Duisburg game club and took part in the German championship finals in 1957 .

Career

Born in 1935, the striker played for Homberger SV as a youth , from where he moved to Duisburg Spielverein in the summer of 1955 after winning the championship in the Landesliga Niederrhein, Group 2. At that time, the DSV was one of the 16 teams in the Oberliga West, which was the highest level of the league system before the Bundesliga was introduced. Münnix was 20 years old when he made his league debut on August 27, 1955, the first day of the upcoming season against Borussia Mönchengladbach . Duisburg fell 2-1 behind, but the debutant was able to turn the score around in favor of his team with two goals in the closing stages. In the further course of the season he was mostly called up, scored four more goals in a total of 23 rounds and took fourth place in the table with his teammates - including Rolf Benning , Josef Broden , Willi Koll , Hans Lohmann - under coach Fred Harthaus .

In the 1956/57 season the DSV was able to improve and won the first seven games, before a draw against city rivals Meidericher SV and a defeat against 1. FC Köln followed. Until the second half of the season, the team in whose ranks Münnix scored four goals in 25 league appearances was at the top of the table and ultimately took second place in the table behind Borussia Dortmund , which entitles them to participate in the German championship finals. Münnix participated in all three preliminary round matches in June 1957, but did not appear as a goal scorer. After a draw against Hamburger SV and a win against 1. FC Saarbrücken , the game against 1. FC Nürnberg was decisive for the final. In this encounter, Münnix twisted an unhappily over and broke his fibula . Because it was not allowed to be substituted at that time, the game club had to bring the match to an end and gave up a temporary lead, which meant that the final was missed. After his injury, the striker was back in the squad for the 1957/58 season, but failed to return to the starting line-up. In 1958 he left the club after three years with 52 league appearances and 10 goals scored and moved to his former club Homberger SV in the third-class association league Niederrhein .
