Thunar (named after the Nordic god Thor ) is the standard file manager of the Xfce desktop environment from version 4.4 RC1, which is designed for Unix-like operating systems , but can also be used without it.

It was originally developed by Benedikt Meurer under the name Filer to replace the file manager Xffm (further developed under the name Rodent ) in Xfce, which was perceived as too complicated , and later renamed due to a name conflict.

The main development goal of the Thunar developers is a fast, technically cleanly programmed and easy-to-use file manager for Xfce. In particular, it should start faster and be more efficient and faster to use than other graphic file managers known under Unix such as GNOME's Nautilus and KDE's Dolphin / Konqueror . Another design goal of the project is accessibility , which is aimed at using assistance techniques such as the Accessibility Toolkit (ATK). Incidentally, Thunar - like all Xfce components - is keen to implement desktop standards such as those from freedesktop.org .

Thunar's user interface can be used both with a button-based address bar and with a toolbar, including an address bar. The optionally displayed sidebar serves either as a tree view of the folder structure of the file system or as a bookmark bar. Thunar can further be provided with the custom actions and provides a plug-in - API available. Thunar offers the following interfaces (APIs) for plugin programmers:

  • Thunar-vfs provides an interface to file system operations .
  • thunarx provides a library to create extensions for Thunar.
