Rodent is a file manager for GNU and Unixoid systems . It is the code name of the further development of the Xfce file manager Xffm, which was abandoned in favor of Thunar .

development

Xffm was developed as the successor to the previously used Xftree for Xfce 4.0. The switch to GTK + 2.0 required a new development of the file manager. The first version (Xffm 4.0) was released with Xfce 4.0. However, because Xffm had a steep learning curve , it was dropped soon after Xfce 4.2 was released, but Edscott Wilson Garcia continued to develop the program.

On May 24, 2006, Xffm received a new user interface with version 4.5.0, after which work began on version 4.6.0, which was only published in 2010 under the code name Rodent (based on the symbolic theme of the same name). This version works thread-based and for the first time no longer has a tree structure. Version 4.8.0 was released on June 27, 2012.

With version 6 Rodent - now also called Xffm + - was completely redeveloped in C ++ on the basis of Gtk + 3.24.

Functions

The main principle in the development of Rodent is to develop the smallest possible, efficient graphical user interface for power users . Rodent is expressly not aimed at novices, but is intended to make file management easier for advanced users.

The Rodent program window is divided into two parts; At the top there is an icon view of the currently opened directory, underneath there is an input line that serves as a terminal emulation . Thus, for example, may in the parent directory by clicking on the corresponding icon as well as changed by typing cd .. . Media files such as graphics are displayed as thumbnails when you hover over them with the mouse and in the "Properties" dialog box.

Files can easily be deleted using the context menu or safely deleted (by overwriting). The search function ( fgr ) can handle wildcards and regular expressions . Using the settings window, it is also possible to manually or automatically hide the desktop of the current working environment ( e.g. KDE ) with a full screen display of the ~ / Desktop folder, i.e. to replace it functionally.

Utilities

Rodent has some additional utilities that extend its functions.

rodent-fstab
rodent-fstab is used to manage hanging points from Rodent.
rodent-ps
rodent-ps provides a graphical user interface for controlling running processes.
rodent-dotdesktop
rodent-dotdesktop is an alternative to application launcher menus. Installed applications are automatically categorized and can be browsed and started.
