3rd Generation Partnership Project 2 or 3GPP2 is a cooperation between standardization bodies in the field of third generation mobile communications (such as UMTS ), which is primarily active in North America, Japan and China . 3GPP2 deals with the details and further developments in the context of mobile radio standards such as the CDMA2000 standard. 3GPP2 was founded almost at the same time as the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) in December 1998 and should not be confused with it.
The Japanese Association of Radio Industries and Businesses (ARIB), the China Communications Standards Association (CCSA) and the US Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) are involved in 3GPP2.
The task of the 3GPP2 is the standardization work and the creation of technical specifications, which are primarily to be established across companies within the framework of the CDMA2000 mobile radio standard. This is used to make the various CDMA2000 mobile devices compatible with all manufacturers. An example of the standardization work carried out by the 3GPP2 is the specified 3g2 video file format .
