MediaCoder is software for Windows to transcode audio / video files in batch processing . A version specially optimized for Wine is made available for Linux users . It uses some open source audio and video codecs and tools to transcode between different formats, and has many additional features such as extracting audio tracks from video files. Many formats are supported, including MP3 , OGG Vorbis , AAC , Windows Media Audio , RealAudio , WAV , Xvid , DivX 4/5, MPEG-2 , AVI , and MediaCoder can also handle CD and DVD media.

Difference to other surfaces for decoders / encoders

MediaCoder is a graphical user interface for a collection of supplied command line tools, codecs and multiplexers . In contrast to comparable programs, the program does much more than just start the individual tools and wait for them to run. MediaCoder “ piped ” the output of the decoder into the input of the encoder instead of using temporary files . This means that large amounts of files can be converted without consuming too much space. Some of the included tools have been patched to enable these additional capabilities.

Editions

MediaCoder is available in several versions, some of which are tailored to very specific tasks:

  • Standard Edition : This includes those codecs that are most common and that implement open standards, i.e. no proprietary formats are supported.
  • Full Edition : The full edition includes all available codecs. This configuration can also be achieved by taking the Standard Edition as a basis and also installing the Extra Codec Pack , which supports proprietary formats such as Windows Media and RealVideo.
  • Audio Edition : This edition can be seen as an independent sub-version of the Standard Edition. All supported non-proprietary audio formats are included, but no video formats. As in the standard edition, extracting the songs from CDs / DVDs is supported.
  • Device Edition : This version can prepare audio and video files so that they can be optimally played on certain devices. There are four versions of this edition, each optimized for PSP, MP3 / MP4 player, iPhone / iPod Touch or mobile phones.
  • CLI version : In addition to the four "editions", MediaCoder also has a command line version that is used to convert any format into another. Unlike the home user editions, this version, which can be built into your own applications, must be licensed for a fee.

financing

Only a limited number of audio files can be specified for conversion ("restricted batch mode"). In addition, according to the manufacturer, there is a compulsory internet connection when the program starts. An alternative is to buy a premium edition. Advertisements for the premium version are displayed at various points in the program.

The installation files transport third-party software that can be installed inadvertently. When the program ends, the Amazon online shop opens (as of March 2013)

criticism

MediaCoder infringed the copyrights of several open source projects, including libavcodec and MPlayer .
