DVD Shrink is a computer program that can transfer video and audio data from a DVD to a PC's hard drive. At the same time, if desired, the video data can be recoded and compressed in the process in order to reduce their storage space requirements. DVD Shrink is freeware and therefore available free of license fees . The program has not been further developed since May 2005. Versions similar in name to DVD Shrink 2010 are usually attempts at fraud, so-called scams .

For example, DVD Shrink can compress films that are stored on double-layer DVDs (two-layer DVDs) from 8.5 gigabytes to 4.7 gigabytes, so that they can also be burned onto single-layer DVDs. It does this primarily through video compression with minimal loss of quality. However, the loss of quality can be higher than with regular MPEG-2 encoders.

Alternatively, instead of compression, DVD shrink also offers "shortening" the video data, i. H. that selected, unneeded DVD content (such as opening and closing credits) can be omitted when burning. But since that is not the central functionality of the program, it is not so mature here either. For example, with this type of “compression” , the original menus cannot be retained with their full functionality. In this context, DVD Shrink offers a standard function in which only the main film of a DVD is transferred. In addition, unwanted audio and subtitle tracks, e.g. foreign language tracks, can be removed in order to gain more space for the video data.

However, other programs (so-called IFO editors, which edit the menu files) are more suitable for more sophisticated compression by omitting .

DVD Shrink is also able to read DVDs encrypted with CSS and to save them again in an unprotected form. However, DVD Shrink is not able to free video DVDs from copy protection mechanisms such as ARccOS or Macrovision . Bypassing effective technical protective measures is not permitted in the European Union (see for Germany about § 95a Copyright Act, for Austria § 90c Copyright Act.) DVD Shrink is therefore no longer offered for download on the official website if the German-language localization has been selected . If you look at the official website in English, however, the download is still possible.

On December 4, 2004, at the request of the community, the author added an English EXE named “CSS-free” , the functionality of which is limited to non-CSS-protected DVDs and can therefore also be hosted in countries where circumvention of copy protection is prohibited is. This incorrect designation - after all, De CSS is needed to bypass CSS - was then corrected on May 31, 2005 with the appearance of the official German version "DVD Shrink DeCSS-Frei".
