DVDFab is a modular collection of different copy and conversion tools for DVD and Blu-ray Disc , which is produced and distributed by the Chinese software company Fengtao Software . The associated programs can be purchased individually either in a time-limited or lifelong license and exist in versions for Windows and macOS . Operating Windows applications under Linux with the help of Wine works satisfactorily in most cases.
DVDFab originally emerged from the DVDToolbox project. Both projects were operated by the German developer Joerg Plenert until the reform of copyright law in 2003.
With the appearance of version 5, the previously offered program variants DVDFab Gold and DVDFab Platinum were functionally expanded and restructured. The package functions were distributed to the largely independent sub-programs described below.
As of version 8, DVDFab can use CUDA technology for transcoding processes to use idle resources from Nvidia graphics cards and thus significantly accelerate the conversion process. A comparable method for ATI cards ( ATI Stream Acceleration ) is currently only supported for the decoding of video material.
From version 8.0.9.0 the user interface of the program is based only on Qt , even in the stable versions , while beta versions were previously offered for a few months based on Qt and not on Qt. As a reason for using Qt, the developer cites the better option of providing various skins , and the switch was an important step towards a Mac version. The new Qt user interface differs only slightly from the user interface of earlier versions.
On September 23, 2011, a version called "Preview" for macOS was released with incomplete functionality. From version 8.1.3.8 of December 10, 2011, the Mac version will be offered for regular sale and will be provided alongside the Windows version.
In direct sales by the manufacturer, DVDFab is only available as a download version. In Germany, bhv Publishing GmbH sells various department store versions on CD, which are delivered in a box and include a two-year update authorization. These versions differ in the composition of the available modules and are available as an all-in-one suite , my film copier 11 or my films on the go 11 .
Main program modules
While there were certain dependencies between modules up to version 7, from version 8 all modules except 2D to 3D converter can run individually and independently of each other. As of June 11, 2015, the 2D to 3D Converter mode will no longer be available. However, all of its features are built into DVD ripper, Blu-ray ripper and video converter. The program package always contains all modules that are activated or deactivated depending on the license found. In the demo version, all modules are available for a limited time. If there is a license for at least one module, the unlicensed modules can be hidden if desired.
DVD copy
The core module copies the content of a video DVD to the hard drive ( ripping ) or to a (writable) optical data carrier . As with comparable programs (e.g. CloneDVD , DVD Shrink ), the material can be transcoded if necessary in order to be able to accommodate the contents of a DVD9 on a commercially available blank DVD5. It is also possible to remove certain material (e.g. menus, foreign-language audio tracks, subtitle tracks) from the copy. As a special function, it is also possible to merge the contents of different DVD sources into a single DVD in such a way that they are played automatically one after the other without a break. Before version 8, this module was sold under the name DVD to DVD .
Blu-ray copy
The Blu-ray module extends the software to include the ability to copy Blu-ray media. From version 6, DVDFab can downgrade material from a BD 50 to the size of a commercially available BD25 blank. As of version 8.0.4.0, downscaling to DVD size is no longer supported by this module, but has been moved to the Blu-ray to DVD Converter module . As with the DVD module, unwanted content can be removed from the copy. Before version 8, this module was sold under the name Blu-ray to Blu-ray .
DVD ripper
This module makes it possible (similar to CloneDVD Mobile ) to convert the material of a video DVD into formats of various video-capable mobile devices. Before version 8, this module was sold under the name DVD to Mobile . This module can only be run without DVD copy from Version 8 .
Blu-ray Ripper (3D Plus)
As of version 7, the software has the option of converting content from Blu-ray media to mobile container formats (e.g. MKV, AVI, DivX and the console's own formats). From version 8.0.5.0 the Blu-ray 3D Ripper module is included in the program. As of version 9.0.3.3 Beta, the two modules are merged to form DVDFab Blu-ray Ripper (3D Plus). With this module all 2D / 3D Blu-rays can be ripped / converted into different 2D / 3D video / audio formats according to your needs. From version 9.1.5.0, only a special, functionally reduced version of DVDFab is offered in the USA, in which this module is no longer available - not even for customers who have a valid license for an earlier version.
Blu-ray to DVD converter
From version 8.0.4.0 this module exists with which the content of Blu-ray media can be downscaled to DVD size with a corresponding loss of quality. In previous versions this function was part of the Blu-ray Copy module .
DVD to Blu-ray Converter
Starting with version 9.1.7.4, DVDFab has released this new module and offered you the possibility to combine and convert many DVD titles from many different DVD sources on a Blu-ray Disc or a digital file, so that you can create your DVD series or collections entirely can simply save and view.
2D to 3D converter
This module has been included in the package since program version 8.0.9.0 and extends the DVD Ripper , Blu-ray Ripper and Video Converter modules by the possibility of converting 2D video material into 3D material and in various container formats (currently AVI, MP4, MKV, FLV , M2TS or TS). Since this is an extension, at least one of the modules mentioned is also required. As of version 9.2.0.2 (June 11, 2015), DVDFab 2D to 3D Converter is no longer sold as a single product. However, all of its features are built into DVD Ripper, Blu-ray Ripper and Video Converter.
Video Converter
Video Converter is a pure conversion program that can convert a video that is already in file form into other formats. Reading and transcoding DVD material is not possible with this module alone. Before version 8, this module was sold under the name File to Mobile .
DVD Creator
With this module you can convert almost all popular video files from the Internet, video camcorders, mobile phones etc. into a DVD video format and burn them to blank DVD discs for playback on standalone players.
Blu-ray Creator
This module converts all video files on PC to BD video formats. It supports almost all video formats like MKV, MP4, AVI, M2TS, TS, MOV, WMV, WMA, 3GP, FLV, M4V and VOB. Not only can you burn video clips to disc, but you can also save films in the Blu-ray folder on the hard drive for later burning.
HD decrypter
With this module, the contents of a medium can be copied to the hard disk. Writing on optical media, compression or sophisticated reauthoring are not possible with it, but - as the only module of the otherwise commercial package - it is freeware . Support for newly released media and new copy protection procedures may not be integrated into this module until a few months later.
File transfer
The File Transfer program , which was originally paid for but has been offered free of charge since April 2013 (version 9.0.3.6), is intended to facilitate the transfer of compatible video material to mobile devices. Although it can in principle also be installed individually, it works directly with the DVD Copy and Blu-ray Copy modules . The individual use hardly makes sense, since the manufacturer of the device usually already provides options for the pure transfer of data to mobile devices. File transfer alone cannot transcode or convert; H. the material to be transferred must already be available in a suitable file format or be brought into such a format using the aforementioned modules of the main program.
At the moment, File Transfer only enables the transfer to iPod , PSP and Zune devices and has not been further developed for several years, apart from minor surface adjustments.

In addition to the modular main program, there are some individually executable programs that supplement work with the main program or make functions of the main program available for other applications.

DVDFab Passkey
DVDFab Passkey is a separate program that works similarly to AnyDVD . It is a process active in the background that removes copy protection technologies and other restrictions from DVD and Blu-ray media and forwards the video data to the processing application unprotected. The program uses the same decryption functions as the DVDFab modules and does not complement DVDFab in any way. The use of Passkey is therefore only useful if material is not to be processed with DVDFab.
During a public beta phase, there was only one version that contained all functions and was available for free. The program has been available in three different versions since November 2010: Passkey DVD only works with DVDs and Passkey Blu-ray only works with Blu-ray media. Both versions are chargeable. There is also the free version Passkey Lite , which can work with DVDs as well as Blu-rays, but does not contain some functions of the purchased versions (for DVDs: no removal of CPPM / CPRM and structural copy protection mechanisms such as ARccOS , for Blu-rays: none BD + support and no processing of discs containing MKB v12 or higher).
Free DVD
Free DVD removes CSS, the analog Macrovisions copy protection and user restrictions (UOPs) from DVD data that has already been copied unprocessed to the hard drive with another program. It is offered for free but does not include the feature to rip DVD to hard drive and like Passkey Lite does not support copy protection techniques based on structural flaws.
DVDFab Region Reset
The Blu-ray media to use region code only a few times may be changed to a system normally. The free program DVDFab Region Reset can on the one hand reset this limit in popular software players such as PowerDVD and on the other hand change the region code settings of supported players without this change being deducted from the limit of the remaining changes.
The function of DVDFab Region Reset is also included in DVDFab Passkey .
DVDFab Virtual Drive
The free add-on program DVDFab Virtual Drive creates, similar to Alcohol 120% , Virtual CD or Virtual Clone Drive , up to 18 virtual DVD or Blu-ray drives into which ISO images of physical data carriers can be mounted .
DVDFab Inspector
DVDFab Inspector is a free program to scan the system for CD / DVD / Blu-ray drives and analyze them. You can get all the information, such as B. the supported media, the firmware version, the writing and reading options and the maximum speeds.

DVDFab Media Player
DVDFab Media Player is a software player for DVD and Blu-ray discs, disc images, and many popular video formats. Up to version 4, which was officially no longer available, the software existed in a free free version and a paid pro version . Only the paid version contains support for disc menus, while the free version can only play video material without a menu (individual video files or disc images that have been modified during the ripping process so that the main film starts directly). Since version 5, an ultra version and an also chargeable but functionally reduced standard version have been offered. Like the main program, DVDFab Media Player can be purchased with various update authorization periods.
Although the AACS license conditions have required Cinavia support since 2012 , DVDFab Media Player is one of the few commercial players to date that does not contain routines for recognizing the corresponding watermark. When playing copied or non-copy-protected media with a Cinavia watermark in the audio track, the effects of the Cinavia copy protection (usually muting the audio output after approx. 20 minutes) do not occur. However, DVDFab Media Player does not contain any functions for bypassing any copy protection on the inserted disc. The indirect bypassing of Cinavia is due to the design of this copy protection, which requires active recognition of the watermark.
Since DVDFab Media Player was first released after 2012 and is still being updated today, the lack of support from Cinavia suggests that DVDFab Media Player is not an AACS LA licensed Blu-ray player.
Legal Aspects
According to the manufacturer, the standard version of DVDFab bypasses CSS as well as all other currently used copy protection technologies for DVDs as well as the AACS encryption of Blu-ray media without asking or being able to influence it . The BD + copy protection has also been levered out since November 2009 and, since January 2011, the Cinavia watermark can also be falsified and thus levered out for a specific special case .
For these reasons, the promotion, distribution and non-private use of DVDFab for copy-protected media are not permitted in most EU countries, including Germany and Austria, in accordance with applicable copyright laws. A version of the main program was offered on dvdfab.net until the introduction of the product BluFab , which worked entirely without encryption bypass, in April 2014, which did not contain any decryption functions for CSS, but could bypass other copy protection methods like the full version. The German domain dvdfab.de, however, refers to the complete version, as it was also made available at dvdfab.com until February 2014 .
DVDFab uses the free software FFmpeg , but only points this out from version 8.1.0.2 and does not provide the source code of the adaptations made or the required license information. DVDFab thus violates the GNU Lesser General Public License , under which FFmpeg was published.
On February 21, 2014, AACS LA filed for an injunction against companies, website operators and people associated with Fengtao Software Inc. (developer of DVDFab). In the absence of representatives from Fengtao Software Inc., the New York Federal Court ruled in favor of AACS:
- Confiscation of various domains , etc. a. dvdfab.com
- Operators of social networks and search engines such as Google and Facebook were asked to stop any service for DVDFab.
- In addition, payment service providers were asked to freeze payments to Fengtao and to stop the service.
