The Open Sound System ( OSS ) is a portable driver system for sound cards for various Unix-like systems , where it has established itself as a quasi-standard. An exception is Linux , which used OSS by default until the end of the 2.4 kernel series and ALSA since the 2.6 kernel . OSS programs can still be used via an emulation. In current Linux kernel versions, OSS is marked as "deprecated" (out of date).

history

The Open Sound System was initiated by Hannu Savolainen in 1992 and was free software . Realizing the increasing success of the project, Savolainen made the improvements proprietary and founded 4Front Technologies , under which he developed and commercialized it. This company also sells proprietary versions of the Open Sound System for UNIX derivatives (e.g. Solaris , FreeBSD ) and also for Linux .

On June 14, 2007 OSS was placed under free licenses, GPL for Linux and BSD operating systems and the CDDL for Solaris. The opening of the project made it possible to attract new developers, but the company's income fell due to a lack of license sales.

OSS was licensed under the BSD license for FreeBSD and other BSD operating systems on January 4, 2008, in addition to the GPL and CDDL .

Functions

As of version 4.0, OSS has ALSA support and the Solaris Audio Device Architecture is also emulated. The system calculates internally with 64-bit.
