Jim Furyk (born May 12, 1970 in West Chester , Pennsylvania ) is an American professional golfer on the PGA Tour . He belongs to the circle of major winners.
Career
Jim Furyk learned the game of golf from his father, Mike, the head pro of Uniontown Country Club near Pittsburgh . After attending the University of Arizona , the talented basketball player decided to pursue a career as a professional golfer in 1992 .
Between 1998 and 2003 Furyk won at least one tournament a year on the PGA TOUR , including his first major - the 2003 US Open - and made it into the top 10 of the golf world rankings . In the 2004 season he was only able to play 14 events because he had to take a three-month break due to a necessary wrist operation. In 2005 and 2006, Furyk was able to make up for what had been missed and consolidate his ranking with further victories and a second place at the 2006 US Open. He finished fourth in the Open Championship , and with his win at the Canadian Open in September 2006, he was second in the golf world rankings. Since then he has consistently been in the top 20 of the world rankings.
At the end of September 2010 he won the final tournament of the PGA TOUR, the Tour Championship . He received 1.35 million US dollars - the highest prize money in golf for a tournament victory. At the same time he won the overall ranking of the series, the so-called FedEx Cup . Furyk received an additional 10 million US dollars from the so-called bonus pool.
Jim Furyk is one of the most successful players on the PGA Tour. He won a total of 70.4 million US dollars (as of March 28, 2019) in his career. Only Tiger Woods , Phil Mickelson and Vijay Singh were able to earn more prize money.
Furyk is one of only six players in the history of the US PGA Tour to play a round of 59 (BMW Championship 2013 at Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest, Illinois). On August 7, 2016, Furyk set a tour record when he became the first PGA player to complete a round of 58 with an eagle and ten birdies at the Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Connecticut .
His caddy is Mike "Fluff" Cowen, who previously accompanied Tiger Woods on his way to number 1.
After appearing nine times as a player in the Ryder Cup for the USA, Furyk was named captain of the US selection for 2018 in January 2017.
The game
Jim Furyk is a “short hitter” in the field of PGA professionals - in the “Driving Distance” ranking, the PGA only ranks him 171st (out of 191) with an average of 280 yards for 2012. His strength, however, is playing with the irons: On strokes from the fairway, Furyk achieved an average approximation of the flag of 32 feet and 10 inches, which was rank 3. Even more impressive was his play from the sand: Here he achieved an average approximation of 6 feet and 11 inches to the flag - the best in the field.
The swing movement of Jim Furyk is very unusual: he leads the club extremely steeply over the head during the upswing, whereby the club head does not remain on a plane of a circular path - as is usually taught - and then hits on a much flatter line. The club head therefore describes a very noticeable "loop" in the air, it continues to work with a very intensive use of the lower body. Overall, Jim Furyk's swing seems very restless and complicated, but works extremely reliably.
