Jerry godfather
Jerome "Jerry" Kendrick Pate (born September 16, 1953 in Macon , Georgia ) is a former American professional golfer whose greatest success was winning the 1976 US Open .
Life
Godfather, who studied at the University of Alabama , was initially an amateur golfer before becoming a professional golfer in 1975. The following year he won the US Open and with it his only major golf tournament . In 1976 he finished second with Dave Stockton at the Men's Golf World Cup in Palm Springs behind the Spaniards Seve Ballesteros and Manuel Pinero .
He was also the 1977 Phoenix Open winner . In 1982, Godfather was finally the winner of the Players Championship , the highest endowed event in the professional North American golf tournament series PGA TOUR .
He played himself in the US comedy film Tin Cup, directed by Ron Shelton and starring Kevin Costner and Rene Russo in 1996 .
