The Cabo Gracias a Dios on the Miskito Coast on the Caribbean Sea

Cabo Gracias a Dios is a headland on the east coast of Central America , on a stretch of coast of the Caribbean Sea , also known as the Miskito Coast or La Mosquita . Here the Río Coco flows into the sea, which forms the border between the autonomous region of Nicaragua's Costa Caribe Norte and the Honduran department in Honduras Gracias a Dios .

This point was chosen as the end point of the border between Honduras and Nicaragua by the Spanish King Alfonso XIII. determined in 1906 and confirmed by the International Court of Justice in 1960.

The Spanish name translates as Cape Thanks be to God (or thank God ). It is said to go back to a saying by Christopher Columbus during his last voyage in 1502, when the weather suddenly calmed down while he was sailing around the cape in a heavy storm. It read: Gracias a Dios hemos salido de esas honduras , which means: 'Thank God that we have escaped these depths'. This is how Honduras got its name (hondura = depth).
