Turnberry is a golf resort on the Firth of Clyde coast in southwest Scotland and one of the regular venues for the British Open . Along the rugged South Ayrshire coast are three links-design golf courses , a golf academy, numerous holiday homes and a luxury hotel designed by James Miller , completed in 1906. The impressive view of the striking rock island Ailsa Craig limits Turnberry to the west.

history

During the First World War , this coastal strip was expanded for military flight operations. During this period, the Royal Flying Corps trained pilots in aerial combat and aerial combat. Turnberry Hotel was used as a hospital for wounded soldiers at the time. After the war, the first two squares were rebuilt and given the names "Ailsa" and "Arran". A memorial to lost pilots, which still exists today, was erected on a hill near the 12Grüns Ailsa Course.

The hotel was also used as a military hospital during World War II and the golf course was used by the Royal Air Force for training purposes.

After a redesign of the course by Mackenzie Ross in 1949, the Ailsa was reopened in 1951 and today offers a view of the rocky island of Ailsa Craig and the island of Arran . In 2014 Donald Trump bought the property for $ 60 million. It made losses in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017.

The golf course

Numerous tournaments and championships have been held on the Ailsa Course. In addition to the four British Open events, the club hosted the Women's British Open in 2002 , the Walker Cup in 1963, the Amateur Championships in 1961, 1983, 1996 and 2008 and has already hosted the Senior Open Championship six times (1987–1990, 2003, 2006).

The other two courses in Turnberry are the Kintyre Course and the 9-Hole Arran Course. The Kintyre Course (reopened 2001) is another championship course. The course was built by Donald Steel based on the original Arran design. The new Arran Course was opened in 2002.

Other facilities at the resort include the Colin Montgomerie Links Golf Academy , which opened in 2000, and a smaller practice course ( pitch and putt ).

The Open Championship

At the premiere of the British Open in Turnberry in 1977, the square was the stage for the famous "Duel in the Sun", when Tom Watson defeated Jack Nicklaus by one stroke . In memory of this event, the 18th hole of the Ailsa Course, "Ailsa Hame", was renamed "Duel in the Sun" in 2003. After three days with identical results, Nicklaus and Watson were comfortably ahead of the rest of the field on the final day. After another tie on the 16th hole, Nicklaus could not use a short putt to the birdie on the 17th hole to equalize again. On the 18th hole Nicklaus came back after a stroke from the rough and a long birdie put and forced Watson to punch his short birdie put, which he succeeded.

At the British Open 2009, the then 59-year-old Tom Watson once again reached for the British golf crown, but lost to Stewart Cink after a dramatic four-hole jump-off.
