The Senior Open Championship , or simply The Senior Open (originally also Senior British Open ) is a professional golf tournament for men over 50 years of age. It is organized by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews . The tournament was first held in 1987 and became part of the European Seniors Tour in 1992 . Since 2003 it has been considered the fifth golf major tournament on the Champions Tour .
