The Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club (short: Royal Lytham & St Annes ) is one of the premium golf clubs in the United Kingdom and is located in the urban area of the seaside resort of Lytham St Annes , Fylde District , Lancashire .
founding
The club was founded in 1886, the square itself was laid out in 1897. In 1919 the course was given its current characteristics by the well-known golf course architect Harry Shapland Colt .
Characteristic
Although the square is a typical representative of the traditional links square, it is located several hundred meters from the beach and is now completely enclosed by the town's buildings. Despite this location, strong sea breezes also regularly influence the game.
The slightly shorter fairway length compared to other "Championship" courses is compensated for by narrow fairways with very strong and high rough on the sides . The main difficulty certainly consists of the more than 200, in some cases very deep, “links course” typical pot bunkers, which even golf professionals often only allow the way to the side or back. Unlike most other tournament courses, the first hole is played as a "par 3".
Tournaments
The course regularly plays host to various international golf tournaments. The last major event was the Walker Cup in 2015
British Open
On June 13, 1893, the world's first golf tournament for women was held here, and Lady Margaret Scott became the winner of the first British Ladies Amateur Golf Championship .
The Open Championship (British Open) for men has also been held here since 1926 . In the first edition, the legendary amateur golfer Bobby Jones was able to secure his first open title here. He won it u. a. About Walter Hagen the most financially successful by far the professional players of this era.
The tournament has been held 11 times so far (as of 2012), the last winner was the South African Ernie Els. He was able to secure his 4 major titles with one stroke ahead of the Australian Adam Scott , although Scott had 4 holes before he finished with 4 Beats.
