Muirfield is one of the regular venues for the British Open and is also home to The Honorable Company of Edinburgh Golfers . The course is located in the village of Gullane , East Lothian , Scotland and overlooks the Firth of Forth in East Scotland .
In addition to hosting the British Open 16 times so far, Muirfield has also hosted the British Amateur Championships and the Ryder Cup in 1973 , the Walker Cup in 1959 and 1979 and the Curtis Cup in 1952 and 1984 .
In contrast to other links courses , the course does not run directly by the sea, but rather stretches in 2 opposing loops along a hill. No more than 3 consecutive holes therefore run in the same direction, which leads to constant changes of wind direction in relation to the direction of play.
The Honorable Company of Edinburgh Golfers
The Honorable Company of Edinburgh Golfers , now based in Muirfield, is considered one of the oldest organized golf clubs in the world. In 1744, the 13 rules of play were the first to be written down for the hosting of a golf tournament. This first competition was held on the so-called Leith Links Course near Edinburgh and won by John Rattray , who was then also given the honor of first club captain.
The first move to Musselburgh took place in 1836 , where the new 9-hole Musselburgh Old Course was created, a public golf course that later no longer met the growing demands of golfers and had become too small. In 1891 the club built a new 18-hole course to host the Open Championship . Old Tom Morris could be won as a space architect. From that time until the mid-1930s the square underwent several renovations and its design has remained unchanged since then. Only changes and extensions of the tees to adapt to the developments in club construction were made afterwards.
