Artesia is a small town in Eddy County ( New Mexico () with 11,301 inhabitants 2010 census ) at an altitude of 1,030 meters and covering an area of 20.7 square kilometers . It received town charter in 1905.
It was named in 1903 after the discovery of the artesian wells in the area, which gave a significant boost to local agriculture in particular.
In the place there is a training facility of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center .

Furthermore, the Navajo Refinery is one of three New Mexico oil refineries located in Artesia. The capacity is 100,000 barrels per day. The other two refineries only have a capacity of 16,800 and 26,000 barrels respectively. This makes the refinery in Artesia of crucial importance for the supply of New Mexico and the neighboring counties with petroleum products.
