The BMW PGA Championship is a men's golf tournament on the European Tour . It was founded in 1955 by the British Professional Golfers' Association and was originally called the British PGA Championship . Since then it has had several sponsor names, with the addition "PGA Championship" often remaining part of the name.
The BMW PGA Championship is held every May on the West Course at the Wentworth Club in Surrey , England . Since the PGA European Tour is headquartered here and is therefore considered the tour's home tournament, the BMW PGA Championship is often viewed as its flagship event. Normally no other event organized by the tour had higher prizes, but that changed in 2009 with the introduction of the Race to Dubai and the $ 10 million Dubai World Championship at the end of the season. There are even more lucrative tournaments on the European Tour, such as the majors and the World Golf Championships , but these are organized by other organizers. With a minimum of 64 ranking points for the winner, the tournament also has a high place in the official golf world ranking .
In 2000, Colin Montgomerie was the only one to achieve a title hat trick .
