Nick Dougherty (born May 24, 1982 in Bootle near Liverpool ) is an English professional golfer .

He is a protégé of the six-time major winner Nick Faldo and had a very successful amateur career with ten tournament wins and a participation in the victorious team of Great Britain & Ireland in the Walker Cup 2001. In the same year Dougherty became a professional golfer .

He became a member of the European Tour through the Tour School in autumn 2001 and was honored with the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year Award for best newcomer in 2002 in his first season . The following year he fell ill with glandular fever , which interrupted his further rise until 2004. In January 2005 he achieved his first tournament victory, at the Caltex Masters in Singapore ahead of Colin Montgomerie and Maarten Lafeber . Dougherty moved into the top 100 of the golf world rankings in mid-2005 and ended the season 15th on the European Tour Order of Merit . Also in the 2006 season he could come up with good results and in October 2007 Dougherty won the prestigious Alfred Dunhill Links Championship . In 2009 he won the BMW International Open .

After 2014, he only played tournament golf occasionally and worked for Sky Sports .

Nick Dougherty was mentored by the famous golf instructor David Leadbetter .
