Volker Schmidt (born September 22, 1978 in Hamburg ) is a former German soccer player (right defender) and today's soccer coach .

Life

Schmidt played in his youth at TV Jahn Wilhelmsburg and later at HNT Hamburg , before moving to the youth team at Hamburger SV in 1991 . He graduated from high school in Süderelbe . In 2002 he rose to the HSV professionals, but was used there very rarely.

The high point of his career were initially three UI Cup games in 2005. Under coach Thomas Doll he was used in July 2005 in the second round games against the Macedonian representative FK Pobeda Prilep and in the following round against União Leiria from Portugal. From the 2006/07 season on, Schmidt was originally no longer part of the HSV professional squad, but was called back to the professional team before the winter break due to injury concerns. On December 9th, 2006 against 1. FC Nürnberg he finally made his Bundesliga debut and can also look back on two further appearances against Alemannia Aachen and Arminia Bielefeld . In the UEFA Cup quarter-finals against Manchester City and in the league game against VfB Stuttgart in April 2009, Schmidt was again in the professional squad, but was not substituted on. In the second team of HSV, which plays in the Regionalliga Nord , Schmidt was a regular player and team captain for a long time . Schmidt has been working as an assistant coach for the HSV U16 youth team since summer 2010, and has also been studying sports and mathematics to become a teacher since autumn 2010.
