Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (born October 13, 1980 in Madrid ) is a Spanish professional golfer on the European Tour .

Career

He won the Spanish amateur championship in 2003, became a professional golfer in 2004 and qualified for the European Tour through the Tour School in autumn . Fernández Castaño won the KLM Open in his first season and was awarded the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year Award for the best newcomer at the end of the season . In 2006 he won the BMW Asian Open , an event that is also part of the Asian Tour .

Fernández Castaño has surpassed his idol Seve Ballesteros in that he won his first Tour title on his 16th appearance, while Seve needed 27 attempts. According to his own statement, he strives to reach the level of the Spanish golf greats Ballesteros, José Maria Olazábal and Sergio García .
