Lo Spagna , actually Giovanni di Pietro (* around 1450 in Perugia ?; † 1528 in Spoleto ) was an Italian Renaissance painter .

Life

Lo Spagna was of Spanish descent. He is probably identical to the Spaniard Johannes Petri, who was documented as a painter in Perugia in 1470. He was either a student or an employee of Perugino in Perugia, whose imitator he was for a long time. Later he came under Raphael's influence , even if a collaboration with him has not been proven.

In 1508 he became an honorary citizen of Macerata , without any evidence of artistic activity there. Lo Spagno traveled to numerous cities in Umbria, including Perugia, Assisi, Campello sul Clitunno, Castel Ritaldi, Gavelli, Scheggino, Todi, Trevi and Visso and carried out commissions there, mainly from the church. Before 1512 he went to Spoleto , where he received citizenship in 1516. In Spoleto he married Santina Martorelli. On August 31, 1517 he received the title "Capitano delle Arti dei Pittori e degli Orefici".

In Spoleto he ran a workshop with numerous employees, including Dono Doni Cecco di Bernardino di Assisi, Giovanni di Girolamo (active 1526–1553), Mariano di Eusterio (1470–1547) and Jacopo Siculo , who married his daughter. Lo Spagna died in Spoleto in 1528, probably of the plague .
