San Benedetto Basilica

The Basilica of St. Benedict, part of the monastery, belongs to the Archdiocese of Spoleto-Norcia . The building was built in 1389 over an older church and has been restored several times. The portico Portico delle Misure on the right side of the facade was built in the 16th century. The facade was rebuilt after 1859. The transept and nave were created in the shape of a Latin cross and were also renewed in the 19th century and restored after further earthquakes. There are works by Vincenzo Manenti in the basilica.

The basilica collapsed in an earthquake on October 30, 2016, but the facade remained standing. This was secured with two metal cages in January 2017 so that the recovery of the art treasures and the reconstruction can begin. The EU has promised financial support for the reconstruction.

Likewise, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Argentea in Norcia collapsed .
