Armenzano (lat. Armentum ) is a district ( fraction , Italian frazione ) of Assisi in the province of Perugia , in Umbria , central Italy .

geography

The village is located 8 km east of Assisi, nestled against the Monte Subasio at an altitude of 759 m above sea ​​level . Today it has about 30 residents. In 2001 there were 40 residents. and in 1950 still 550 inhabitants. The closest place is San Giovanni , a district of Spello . The provincial and regional capital Perugia is about 25 km to the west.

In the village there is a central castle on a hill, around which the houses of the village are grouped in two concentric circles.

history

In the Middle Ages the castle belonged to Count Napoleone di Umbertino dei Monaldi, a friend of St. Francis whom he often welcomed. At the same time, Armenzano was part of the municipality of Spello and the Count of Spoleto . The village was later sold to Assisi and has been a permanent part of the city since 1860 . The local churches still belong to the diocese of Spello and thus to the diocese of Foligno .
