Estes Park is a city in Larimer County in the US state of Colorado on the Big Thompson River , which is dammed here to form Lake Estes . The population was 5,858 as per the 2010 census .

The Stanley Hotel

The city was named after Joel Estes, who founded Estes Park in 1859. It is located in a valley at 2293 m above sea level. In the summer it is a popular destination with numerous tourist shops and main access to the Rocky Mountain National Park .

In the old town, a number of houses from the Wild West era have been preserved and lovingly restored.

On the outskirts is the Stanley Hotel from 1906. Stephen King , who stayed here, was inspired by the facility for his novel The Shining .

Every year the Gospel Music Association organizes its music in the Rockies festival for young people here.

The city suffered severe damage in July 1982 from flooding caused by the failure of the Lawn Lake Dam .

Demographics

The 5,413 residents of Estes Park found in the 2000 census lived in 2,541 households; including 1,565 families. The population density was 359 per km ². 3,323 residential units were recorded in the village. Among the population were 95.1% White, 0.3% African American, 0.5% American Indian, 0.8% Asian, and 2.1% from other races; 1.2% said they belonged to several ethnic groups.

Of the 2,541 households, 20.5% had children under the age of 18; 31.0% were single households. The average household size was 2.11 and the average family size was 2.61.

The population was distributed among 17.6% under 18 years of age, 5.8% from 18 to 24 years of age, 26.6% from 25 to 44 years of age, 29.4% from 45 to 64 years of age and 20.7% from 65 years of age or older. The median age was 45 years.

The median household income was $ 43,262 and the median family income was $ 55,667. The per capita income at Estes Park was $ 30,499. 4.5% of the population lived below the poverty line.
