The Stanley Hotel is a hundreds of room neo-colonial-style hotel facility in Estes Park , Colorado ; it is located a few miles from the access to Rocky Mountain National Park and offers views of Estes Lake and the Rocky Mountains. Launched and designed by Freelan Oscar Stanley, the hotel opened on July 4, 1909; The target group was the American upper class. The hotel has been listed as a Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places since 1977 . Stephen King , a previous guest at the Stanley, used the facility as inspiration for the Overlook Hotel featured in his novel The Shining .
The Stanley is currently still being run as a hotel; thanks to the success of the film adaptation by Stanley Kubrick (1980) and the miniseries of the same name, The Shining from 1997, which were filmed outdoors on location, tours with the topic of “paranormal activities” are also offered there. In addition, films and mini-series are always available in the hotel via its own cable channel.
In 2015 a hedge maze was laid out in front of the hotel; another bow to the successful film adaptation of Stanley Kubrick (there is no such labyrinth in the novel).
