history
Before the place was founded in 1884, the Ute tribe settled the area. Silver and gold ore finds brought many people to the remote mountains around Lake City from 1874, which developed into the supply center of the area. In 1889, the place received a narrow-gauge (914 mm) rail connection by the Denver and Rio Grande Western railway company. In the surrounding mountain meadows, cattle and sheep were used for grazing. In 1905, mining largely ended and the population fell to around 400. From the 1920s, tourism developed into another branch of the economy. In 1978 the Lake City Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places .
