Extreme skiing
Extreme skiing is skiing in extremely steep or impassable terrain and is a special form of freeride . An extreme skier usually climbs to the top of a mountain or flies up the mountain in a helicopter and then drives over fields of deep snow and through ice channels ( couloirs ) from. In doing so, he may have to jump over rocks , cornices , overhangs and almost vertical slopes and avoid boulders and vegetation.
The extreme skier moves away from the marked and controlled ski slopes in the high alpine region. There he can be buried by avalanches , hit rocks if he falls, fall over unsecured rock ledges or seriously injure himself in places inaccessible to the mountain rescue service . Extreme skiers therefore wear a sports helmet and protectors . Also in this discipline there are competitions in which the point evaluations u. a. according to the difficulty of the chosen route.
In the European Alps , places like Chamonix , La Grave and Alagna Valsesia are particularly associated with extreme skiing.
