Mount Sneffels

Mount Sneffels is a 4,312 meter (14,150 ft ) high mountain in the US state of Colorado . It is located about eight kilometers west of the city of Ouray in the county of the same name in the Mount Sneffels Wilderness of the northern San Juan Mountains . The area is part of the Uncompahgre National Forest . Mount Sneffels is one of the 86 so-called " Fourteeners " in the USA, one of the mountains that are over 14,000 feet high.

To the southeast below the summit is the Yankee Boy Basin ; here the source of the Sneffels Creek, which later flows into the Uncompahgre River .

history

Mount Sneffels was named after the Icelandic volcano Snæfellsjökull , as the area of the western flank is somewhat reminiscent of the appearance of a volcanic crater .

Seen from the Dallas watershed on Colorado State Highway 62, Mount Sneffels is arguably one of the most photographed mountains in Colorado today.

Routes to the summit

The two most popular routes to the summit begin on the south side of the mountain: the main route begins in the Yankee Boy Basin and follows a creek bed from here. Another path leads up from the Blue Lakes Pass over a mountain ridge .
