Gerdes (also: Geerdes ) is a family name of East Frisian origin.

Gerdes is a patronymic name of "Gerd", a short form of " Gerhard ". With over 12,000 namesake, he is one of the most common family names in Germany. Like the other patronymic formations, the patronymy only solidified in the 19th century after tough resistance from the East Frisians to the introduction of family names.
