Gerd Gustav Max Gerdes (born December 20, 1922 in Neubrandenburg ; † August 24, 2014 in Wanzleben-Börde ) was a German agricultural scientist and local researcher .

Life

After elementary school in Neubrandenburg and from 1930 to 1933 in Greifswald until 1940, Gerd Gerdes attended the Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Gymnasium Greifswald . From 1940 to 1945 he was a German soldier in World War II . He was wounded three times and was released as a lieutenant . In Plön he did his Abitur by 1946 .

This was followed by an agricultural apprenticeship with subsequent studies in agriculture at the University of Greifswald from 1948 , which he completed in 1950 with a degree in agriculture . Gerdes worked as a research assistant at Greifswald University and Leipzig University. In 1952 he received his doctorate in Leipzig and became head of seed breeding in Granskevitz and Klein Wanzleben . From 1956 Gerdes worked as a lecturer at the Institute for Arable and Crop Production. In 1956 he completed his habilitation in Leipzig and took over the position of director of his institute. At the same time he worked as a professor with a teaching position at what was then the Bernburg University of Agriculture . From 1962 to 1968 he was director of the Institute for Plant Breeding and later beet research in Klein Wanzleben. On April 23, 1968, he was relieved of his position as director of the institute because he was not a member of the SED. He then worked there as a scientific department head until 1987. Between 1952 and 1987 numerous scientific publications on agricultural topics were produced. From 1966 to 1987 Gerdes was a member of the editorial team of Feldwirtschaft magazine.

After his retirement in 1987 , he turned to local history research into the postal, personal and urban history of Wanzleben and the Wanzleben district . On this topic, he came out with various publications. The collections and works have been transferred to the Museum for Communication Berlin , the Saxon State Archives in Leipzig and the Börde-Museum Burg Ummendorf.

Gerdes worked on the Magdeburg Biographical Lexicon and was awarded the Bördekreis culture prize in 2003.
