Michael Gerdes (born May 23, 1960 in Bottrop ) is a German politician ( SPD ) and electrical worker . In 2009 , 2013 and 2017 he was elected to the Bundestag as a direct candidate for the constituency of Bottrop-Recklinghausen III .

Life, education, job

From 1975 to 1977 he completed an apprenticeship as an electrical system installer at AEG-Telefunken and then graduated in 1980 as a miner and electrical builder at RAG Deutsche Steinkohle , Prosper-Haniel mine in Bottrop . From there he worked as an underground electrician until 1997. From 1997 to 2009 he started working as an exempt member of the works council for social affairs at the same mine. Since 2009 he has been a directly elected member of the Bundestag for constituency 125 (Bottrop, Gladbeck and Dorsten ).

He is married with three daughters and six grandchildren. He grew up in a working-class family, his father was a carpenter, later an industrial foreman, while his mother worked as a commercial clerk and housewife.

Political career

Gerdes joined the SPD in 1976 and later became a board member of the local SPD branch in Boverheide. Since 1994 he has been a member of the Bottrop City Council. There he became deputy chairman of his parliamentary group as well as chairman of the committee for sport and pools. He has been a directly elected member of the Bundestag for constituency 125 ( Bottrop , Gladbeck and Dorsten ) since 2009 and was re-elected to the Bundestag in 2013 and 2017 . He is also a member of the regional council of the Münster administrative region. Until 2017 he was also sub-district chairman of the SPD Bottrop.

Member of the Bundestag

In the 2009 Bundestag election , he won the direct mandate of his constituency with 42.8 percent of the first votes .

Michael Gerdes is a member of the Committee for Labor and Social Affairs , where the focus of his work is in the Bundestag. He is also a member of the SPD working group for labor and social affairs and thus a reporter for the topics of occupational safety , reduced earning capacity , social elections , youth and the labor market as well as work 4.0 . As a member of the committee, he campaigns for the interests of employees, B. for a generally binding minimum wage . He is also a deputy member of the Committee on Education, Research and Technology Assessment .

On June 30, 2016, he voted for the Federal Council's draft law to introduce the right to marry people of the same sex, the so-called "marriage for all".
