The S & P / TSX Composite Index is a Canadian stock index that comprises the largest companies on the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) by market capitalization . It is administered by the Canadian Standard & Poor’s Committee and is the most important stock index in Toronto alongside the S & P / TSX 60 .

calculation

The S & P / TSX Composite Index is a price index in which the 220 largest public companies of the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) are listed (as of December 31, 2008). The market value of the companies in the index is 95 percent of the Canadian stock market. The index level is determined solely on the basis of share prices and only adjusted for income from subscription rights and special payments. The weighting is based on the market capitalization of the listed companies. Corporate actions such as stock splits have no (distorting) influence on the index.

The calculation is updated every second during TSX trading hours from 09:30 to 16:00 local time (15:30 to 22:00 CET). The stocks that are available to choose from must be among the most important companies in Canada. The headquarters of the company plays a role as well as other characteristics that the index committee determines. The composition is reviewed every quarter by the Index Committee and adjusted if necessary.

Selection criteria

The index committee has issued the following criteria:

  • Market capitalization: This must have a minimum weight of 0.05 percent of all companies listed in the index. In addition, the average price of the stock over the past three months and three trading days of the month prior to the index composition review should be at least one Canadian dollar .
  • Liquidity: The trading volume in Canadian dollars and the number of transactions must not be less than 0.025 percent of the trading volume of all listed securities . To ensure that no single company dominates the trade, value, volume and transactions are limited to a maximum of 15 percent.
  • Domicile: The shares must be listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange and registered under Canadian law.

history

Historical overview

S & P / TSX Composite Index 1960–2012

The index was founded on January 3, 1977 under the name TSE 300 Composite Index with a base value of 1,000 points and was calculated back to 1937 (daily rates) and 1914 (monthly rates). A milestone in the development of the TSE 300 is February 1, 1996, when the index closed at 5,011.10 points for the first time above the 5,000 point mark. In the following years the index marked further record levels. On March 24, 2000, it ended trading at 10,052.68 points for the first time above the 10,000 point mark. By September 1, 2000, it rose to a closing level of 11,388.82 points, which was its all-time high for half a decade.

In 2002 Standard & Poor’s agreed to manage the TSE 300 Composite Index. On May 1, 2002, the name was changed to S & P / TSX Composite Index . After the speculative bubble burst in the technology sector ( dot-com bubble ), the index fell to a low of 5,695.33 points by October 9, 2002. That was a decrease of 50.0 percent compared to September 1, 2000. October 9, 2002 marked the end of the downward trend.

From autumn 2002 the S & P / TSX Composite Index began to rise again. On July 19, 2007, it marked an all-time high with a closing score of 14,625.76 points. In the course of the international financial crisis , which had its origin in the US real estate crisis in the summer of 2007, the index began to decline again. The S & P / TSX Composite Index fell to its lowest level since October 7, 2003 on March 9, 2009 when it ended trading at 7,566.94 points. Since the all-time high of July 19, 2007, this corresponds to a decline of 48.3 percent.

March 9, 2009 marked the end of the downward trend. From spring 2009, the S & P / TSX Composite Index was on the way up again. By April 5, 2011, it rose by 88.6 percent to a closing level of 14,270.53 points. The weakening of the global economy and the worsening of the euro crisis led to a slump in Canada's leading index. On October 4, 2011, the S & P / TSX Composite Index ended trading at 11,177.91 points. The loss since the peak on April 5, 2011 is 21.7 percent.

The announcement of new bond purchase programs by the European Central Bank and the US Federal Reserve , which are basically unlimited, led to a recovery in prices on the stock market. The monetary stimulus played a bigger role in the price formation than the global economic slowdown and the state of the companies. On January 15, 2013, the index closed at 12,641.97 points, 13.1 percent higher than on October 4, 2011.
