The Catholic parish church of Saint-Baudile in Noves , a Provençal parish in the Bouches-du-Rhône department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region , was built in the 12th century. It has been recognized as a monument historique since 1999 .

history

It is believed that the church was built on a cult site that was already known in ancient times. Only a few remains of the wall have survived from the previous building of today's church, which was built in the 10th century. Two construction phases can be distinguished in the Romanesque new building: the eastern parts were built around 1140/50, the western part of the church around 1180; the barrel vaults of both parts are slightly pointed at the apex. In 1430, two rib-vaulted side chapels resting on consoles were added, which together act like a transept ; the consoles are made as heads. The west stand and the sacristy date from the 17th century .

architecture

The church, dedicated to St. Baudilius of Nîmes , borders a medieval fortress . That is why the church tower was expanded into a mighty watchtower . The apse shows a pilaster structure with a final round arch frieze below the eaves . The many side chapels convey a complex picture from the outside. The masonry made of precisely hewn ashlar stones shows many stonemason's marks . The portal is on the south side and has bronze doors with angel reliefs . The single nave joins the crossing , by a squinches dome is surmounted with an octagonal base. The adjoining semicircular apse is divided by blind arcades, the columns of which - as is often the case in Provence - show differently shaped canals and beautifully designed leaf capitals ; it is vaulted by an articulated dome .

Furnishing

There are several figures and stained glass windows in the side chapels. Particularly noteworthy are a carved and polychrome Pietà from the 15th century and a baroque reliquary bust of St. Baudilius with a small shop window. A 19th century stained glass window depicting the beheading of St. Baudilius also deserves attention.
