The War Shipping Administration ( WSA ) was an authority that during the Second World War had the task of acquiring and operating merchant ships for the United States of America and thus providing the transport capacities that were necessary for warfare.

The WSA was established on February 7, 1942 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Executive Order No. Founded in 9054 . It was an offshoot of the United States Maritime Commission , founded in 1936 , which oversaw the construction of merchant ships. Both organizations were headed by Vice Admiral Emory S. Land and worked closely together. During the war, the available number of merchant ships increased to more than 3,500 general cargo carriers and over 900 fast tankers .

The shipping space administered by the WSA was made available to the Merchant Navy , the United States Army or the United States Navy as required . In the Combined Shipping Adjustment Board, the WSA worked closely with the British Ministry of War Transport (MOWT) in order to achieve the most efficient possible use of the existing allied transport capacities.

After the war, the WSA ships were used as part of Operation Magic Carpet to transport American troops back to the USA. By December 1, 1945, more than 3.5 million soldiers had been brought back to their homeland. On September 1, 1946, the tasks of the WSA were returned to the Maritime Commission and the WSA dissolved.
